Perfect castings for the London Undergound
September 2, 2013
We are delighted to announce that Sarginsons are working closely with the London Underground on the manufacture of castings to be used on battery locomotives.
Maintaining more than 250 miles (402 km) of underground track is a demanding task. The movement of specialist equipment to maintain the track is carried out by a unique range of battery powered locomotives. Being able to switch between battery power and line power (630V D.C) is one of the reasons why these locomotives are used to transport materials and engineers around the underground lines.
London Underground is now upgrading 29 of the locomotives, some of which were manufactured in the 1970’s. Sand cast patterns that Sarginsons had not used since 2006 were taken out of safe storage and have been used to create perfect castings.
Each component weighs 20Kg and 600Kg of sand is used in the manufacture of the pattern and the seven individual sandcores, each component has four cast-in steel inserts for the load bearing points.
London Underground are as pleased with the castings today as they were when we first produced them.
