Street, who was raised in Birmingham, visited Sarginsons’ plant to see the work it undertakes as the UK’s most sophisticated gravity, sand and low pressure diecasting company.

The company, which celebrated its 80th anniversary last year, has recently been working with Brunel University and Jaguar Land Rover on an Innovate UK scheme, established by the by the government.

The work has led to the development of a new lightweight aluminium alloy that is as strong as steel and totally recyclable.

Anthony Evans, Managing Director at Sarginsons Industries, said:

“We were delighted to welcome Andy and to show him just what we do and how we fit into the supply chains of our various companies.

“We have worked closely with clients and Higher Education to further enhance expertise across the sector and develop the engineers of the future and we are continually striving to make improvements not only to what we can produce but also to our own processes.

“Lightweighting technology is key to supporting manufacturers to improve their carbon footprint and to reduce emissions and we aim to very much keep at the cutting edge of pioneering technology.

“The new mayor will have considerable powers and will have to work closely with industry as we look to drive forward the regional economy. We felt it was important that Andy understood not only what we do, but also to get a feel for the expertise that lies in manufacturing in Coventry and Warwickshire.”

Andy Street added:

“Sarginsons is exactly the type of business the West Midlands is great at developing. But we need to get better at it. The challenges around skills, transport and business support were very familiar and we need to do more to create the conditions for growth. As Mayor, I look forward to playing my part in helping them achieve their potential.”
